Get to know more about the European Young Engineers

Meet the EYE members

Get to know more about the European Young Engineers (EYE) and the people who are coming to the conferences: We have spoken with Cornelia Fleischer about the pre last EYE conference in Antwerp.

Bild: privatEYE_FleischerCornelia, where are you from and what have you studied?
I am from Germany, and studied Engineering in biopharmaceutical technology.

Why EYE?
Why not? No, seriously: it’s fun to get to know engineering students and professionals through EYE. Everybody has valuable input, and the atmosphere at a conference is just really all that it takes to be hooked.

EYE@Antwerp was not your first conference. You are also in the board of EYE active: How do you come to this, please tell us something about your way within EYE.
Almost as soon as I started actively participating in VDI meetings, I also started being involved with EYE. I started out doing voluntary work with the “Bewerbungshandbuch” for the VDI, and went on to become a member of the students and young engineers board of the VDI, and thus also a member of the EYE council, representing the VDI there. I helped a little with the organization of the WEC11/EYE@Geneva, which was great fun. When my time on the SuJ board expired, I was asked to stand for election as Deputy Secretary General to the EYE, and very gladly did. I am thankful I was elected, and hope to prove that the trust put in me was well-placed.

What do you think has changed or has become better with the years with EYE and what do you want to change during your term in office?
EYE has grown very much since I first started attending meetings. There are internal changes that make a world of difference in the organizing part of it. We are planning a lot of new things, such as a presentation award, and a “European Young Engineer of the Year” award, and other things. But: What’s a lady without a secret?
Watch out for more exciting things to come! We certainly have some things up our sleeves yet!

What was your most beautiful conference experience and why?
That one is definitely hard to answer! There were so many really awesome events and happenings going on, it is almost impossible to choose!
The workshop on how to work up magnetic charisma was wonderful, and I also enjoyed needing to have everyone talk louder during council meeting, so as to be heard over everyone else having so much fun with the engineering challenges in the other rooms!
Having a famous Chocolatier give us a taste of the finest Belgian chocolates in what used to be Napoleons kitchen certainly was another thing to be remembered! Also in the sense of EYE, as we bring European people peacefully together (quite to the contrary of what Napoleon tried to do).

What ist your biggest motivation to work complimentary in the EYE organisation?
Honestly? To see it grow! The European crisis has put a strain on almost anything „voluntary“, and it is sometimes hard to make people see why what we do is important. But when they do it is just really an indescribable feeling. Also to know that it will help so many people evolve and to see how much fun people have interacting across borders, and how little nationality, language, scientific field matters – pure awesomeness!

What else do you want to get rid of about EYE?
I would not necessarily say I want to get rid of anything regarding EYE. Come check us out. We are fun and open, and we can guarantee you will learn something new every day you spend with us!

  1. I’m amazed, I have to admit. Seldom do I encounter a blog that’s equally educative and amusing, and without a doubt,
you’ve hit the nail on the head. The problem is an
issue that not enough folks are speaking intelligently about.
Now i’m very happy I found this during my hunt for something concerning this.
